Austrian companies realised the immense potential in solar energy long ago and are now among the world's top providers.

In the latest EU ranking of "Solar energy facilities" Austria is in second place; worldwide it takes 8th place, ahead of the USA and Australia. But Austrian companies do not only kit out the Alpine republic with solar energy, they also have exceptional international success. The olympic swimming pool in Peking and an EU commission building in Brussels are among the facilities equipped with Austrian solar technology.

Exports of Austrian solar technology have more than tripled since 2002. Since 2001 more solar panels have been sold abroad than installed in Austria. In 2007, 800,000 square metres of solar panels in the EU came from Austria - this meant that one in three solar panels in the EU-27 is from Austria. Austrian solar companies are market leaders in Germany, Spain, France and Italy. Overseas markets such as the USA and Asia are also gaining importance.
