Austria's agricultural exports up by 10 percent
A third of Austrian food and beverage exports go to Germany. Even in the face of the world financial crisis, the prospects remain bright for agricultural exports.
According to Agrar Markt Austria Marketing GmbH (AMA) , Austria's agricultural exports rose by 10% to EUR 7.98 bn last year. This meant that the foreign trade deficit for agriculture dropped to EUR 350 m, or less than 5%. As a basis for comparison, in the year of Austria's accession to the EU, 1995, imports of agricultural products were still 40% higher than exports.
This year the deficit in agricultural foreign trade is expected to drop still further, despite the world financial crisis. As is the trend with overall Austrian export statistics, around a third of exports go to Germany, especially dairy products, drinks, fruit and vegetables.
