Holiday destination Austria welcomes record number of guests
The number of arrivals in Austria increased by 3.6% in 2011 and reached an all-time high of 34.62 million. International guests accounted for around two-thirds of arrivals (+4.5%).
Austria's tourism firms managed to fill their rooms in 2011 even more than in the previous year: the number of overnights increased by 0.8% against 2010 to 125.98 million. Here the percentage of international guests was also pleasing, reaching 72%. This means that tourism will once again contribute a surplus to Austria's trade balance in 2011.
With the international guests the falls in traditional markets such as Germany, Great Britain and the Netherlands were more than compensated for by increases in guests from other countries. There was a massive rise in guests from Switzerland (+12.6% to 4.28 million). Guests from France (+2.7%) and Belgium (+4.1%) also stayed for longer. Particularly strong growth was seen in holidaymakers from the CEE - particularly Russia (+25.6%), Poland (+6.7%), Hungary (+6%), the Czech Republic (+5.3%) and Romania (+3.8%).
