Vienna tops worldwide ranking of "smart cities"
A recently published technology and sustainability ranking in the online magazine "Co.Exist" sees US climate strategist Boyd Cohen award first place to Vienna - followed by Toronto and Paris. The following top 10 smart cities are New York, London, Tokyo, Berlin, Copenhagen, Hong Kong and Barcelona.
Innovation and sustainability are the most important criteria for a smart city according to the author, Boyd Cohen. The use of information and communication technology for an efficient approach to resources is also taken into account. The high quality of life and a moderate ecological footprint also played a key role in Vienna's top spot in the rankings.
With a population of 1.7 million Vienna is a worldwide model for urban quality of living. Vienna was the only city in the top 10 in every single one of the categories considered by the author - from innovation to green city to quality of life. A range of global and regional rankings and studies were evaluated for this "Smart Cities" ranking , the first of its kind worldwide.
