Doppelmayr cable car opens in London

5 August 2012

The "Emirates Air Line" (London Cable Car), built by Austrian ropeway engineers Doppelmayr, has given London another attraction just in time for the 2012 Olympics.

Just a few weeks before the start of the Summer Olympics (27th July to 12th August) England’s first ever urban cable car has opened in London. The cable car over the Thames is 1,100 metres long and runs from Greenwich to the Royal Victoria Docks.

Around 2,500 passengers can travel per hour in both directions in the cable car’s 34 gondolas. The passengers have a spectacular 360-degree view of the city’s sights from heights of up to 90 metres.

The project was predominantly financed through private investment and its total costs are around EUR 75 million. The cable car is well-integrated into the public transport network and will remain open for travel after the Olympic Games.

The global market leader in ropeway engineering, Doppelmayr has realised 14,300 projects in a total of 87 countries.
