Austria proves attractive business location for international companies

27 May 2013

Strong results for consultancy firm ABA - Invest in Austria: 201 companies started business operations in Austria in 2012, a rise of 10% on 2011.

Despite a problematic economic backdrop, the number of international companies setting up businesses in Austria rose by 10%. This makes 2012 the second best year ever for ABA – Invest in Austria . The 201 new companies created a total of 2,385 jobs (+31%) and invested EUR 282.37m.

Germany has traditionally been the most important investor and was once again responsible for the highest number of new businesses with 63 projects (2011: 71), followed by Italy with 22 (2011: 16). Interest from the BRIC states was particularly strong: with 26 projects, the number of companies from Brazil, Russia, India and China practically doubled against 2011 (14).

The strongest areas in terms of sector were services related to manufacturing (32 projects), retail (19), IT (18), tourism (15), plastics/chemicals (12) and life sciences (11) in 2012. The number of new research and development companies setting up in Austria rose from 10 to 14.

The figures reflect Austria’s strong standing against the international competition and the way in which favourable business policy has made it an even more attractive place for doing business. Around 650 investment projects are currently in the pipeline, suggesting that 2013 will be another good year.
