WorldSkills 2013: Team Austria wins 11 medals
Skilled workers from Austria are among the best in the world, as Team Austria conclusively proved at the international skills competition, WorldSkills 2013 , held in Leipzig from 3rd to 7th July 2013. With 11 medals (5 x Gold, 2 x Silver and 4 x Bronze) and 11 Medallions for Excellence, Austria took its place in the world’s top ten, coming in 6th place. Austria even came first out of all the EU states.
The Austrian WorldSkills team took gold medals in the vocations Cooking, Painting and Decorating, Wall and Floor Tiling, Architectural Stonemasonry and Plumbing and Heating. The two silver medals went to competitors in Bricklaying and Joinery, with bronze medals in the categories Landscape Gardening, Construction Metalwork, Cabinetmaking and Restaurant Service. This year the Austrian team was represented by 29 young skilled workers in 27 vocations, competing against over 1,000 international participants from 54 countries.
Austrian teams have regularly participated in the WorldSkills contests since 1961 and have won a total of 187 medals. The next WorldSkills competition will take place in 2015 in Sao Paulo (Brazil), with EuroSkills 2014 coming up before that in Lille (France).
