New all-time high for Austrian tourism
The tourism industry achieved a record high in 2012 with 131.02 million overnights, with the latest figures from Statistics Austria showing the following year to be even stronger. In 2013 overnights rose by 1.2% yoy to 132.6 million. There was a particularly sharp increase in overnights for international visitors, which rose by 1.9% to 96.84 million – the third best result after 1991 and 1992.
The number of arrivals also set a new record, with an increase of 1.8% to 36.83 million, whereby international guests accounted for around two thirds (24.81 million). With 12.03 million arrivals, holidaymakers from Austria were at an all-time high.
Broken down by country, overnights for German visitors were up 2.4% on 2012. In contrast, overnights from the second most important country – the Netherlands – slipped back by 2.6%. Rises were seen in guests from other key countries such as Switzerland (+0.4%), Belgium (+0.9%), the Czech Republic (+1.1%), Sweden (+2.5%), the United Kingdom (+5.2%), the USA (+6.3%) and Russia (+9.4%).
