Record results for business location projects in Austria

18 February 2016

297 international companies established new business operations in Austria last year. CEE and CIS countries accounted for more than one-quarter of all projects.

Austria’s national investment promotion company ABA-Invest in Austria provided professional assistance for 297 foreign investment projects in 2015. This represents an increase of 8%, and thus a further improvement on the record results generated in the previous year. The increase in total investments was even more pronounced, climbing by 34% to EUR 496 million. However, the number of new jobs created in Austria as a consequence of these foreign investments projects declined slightly to 2,613 compared to 2,645 in 2014.

Germany was the most important investor nation with 103 companies establishing business operations in Austria, followed by Italy with 42 companies. Interest on the part of investors from CEE and the CIS regions remains high or is increasing: With 77 companies, this group accounted for 26% of all ABA business location projects. Never before did Hungary (25) and Slovakia (13) account for so many foreign investment projects as in 2015. Moreover, 9 investments projects involved Russian companies, 8 from Slovakia, 5 each from Czech Republic and Bulgaria and 4 companies from Ukraine were supported by ABA.

Austria’s appeal as a business location lies in its function as a hub to Central, Eastern and South Eastern Europe, the skilled and qualified workforce, high stability and legal security. On the other hand companies from the CEE and CIS region use Austria as a springboard for their expansion to Western European markets.

The outlook for 2016 is bright: ABA is currently supporting a total of 755 international companies with a specific interest in establishing operations in Austria, 2.5% more than in January 2015.
