An increase in recent years of the importance of the capital market for corporate financing has also been seen in Austria. Banks continue to be the most important intermediaries between supply and demand for capital in Austria. Banks and insurance companies are among the largest investors, employers and taxpayers in Austria. Austrian banks and insurance firms have been involved in CEE and SEE countries for many years, making Austria a bridgehead between the new markets in Eastern Europe and traditional target groups.
