Albanian Railway may be given on concession

9. March 2009

The Albanian Railway has inherited an old system of administration, very expensive and little efficient.

In the past it used to be a massive and rapid service, not the train journeys are preferred by fewer and fewer people. In most of the lines, the speed of the carriages doesn’t go beyond the 40 km per hour and a short journey may last many hours. The conditions of accommodation inside the carriages leave too much to desire as well, and they also clearly indicate the crisis in which the service currently finds itself.
But senior officials of the Albanian Railway have raised a commission in order to examine the offers of two foreign companies, which have expressed their interest to take with concessions the Albanian Railway system.
