Young Austrian company wins million-dollar prize

commendo came through ahead of 40,000 competitors in an international software competition from Netflix. The awards ceremony took place on 21 September 2009 in New York.

Netflix, an American online DVD rental company, launched their search for enhanced software with an international competition. A total of more than 40,000 companies from 186 countries took part in the contest, which offered prize money of one million US dollars.
 
The Austrian company was already edging ahead in the earlier rounds, before scoring a strategic coup: commendo joined up with its main rivals - scientists from the US telecoms company AT&T, a researcher from “Yahoo” and a Canadian team - and thereby won the race. The prize money will be split between the four-person company from Köflach in Styria and their US and Canadian partners. commendo will be investing its unexpected windfall in building up the company.

commendo research & consulting GmbH is specialised in the development of mathematical and statistical models and algorithms, in particular those for personalised recommendation systems. There is already a recommendation engine developed by commendo for online shops and online distribution portals in use internationally in a range of diverse industries.
