Wind power is a highly dynamic global market with strong growth rates: this potential is also being tapped by Austrian supply firms. Globally in 2010 around EUR 50 billion was invested in wind energy.

A strong supply industry for the wind power sector has developed in Austria over the past few years and these companies have managed to play a role in the rapid growth of the global wind power market. These are the findings from a study on wind power as an economic factor, conducted by IG Windkraft and the Austrian Energy Agency (in German) for the Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology.

There are already more than 120 supply and service firms working in the wind energy sector in Austria – including those in automation (Bachmann electronic GmbH), generators (Elin Motoren GmbH ), turbine systems (AMSC Windtec GmbH) and high-tech materials (Hexcel). One of these companies, Bachmann electronic GbmH , is even a true world market leader: the Vorarlberg firm provides the control system for one in every two wind turbines erected across the globe. The steel for the wind towers is produced by voestalpine AG .

Hoisting technology companies such as Palfinger AG , Prangl Gesellschaft m.b.H and Felbermayr Holding GmbH have established themselves as specialists in installing the giant wind turbines. In 2009 export volumes generated by Austrian supply and service firms totalled around EUR 470 million.
