Austria's capital city has successfully retained its top spot. Hardly surprising given that every year some of the world's largest conferences are held in Vienna.

Half a dozen top spots: the 2010 ranking by International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) puts Vienna, with 154 international congresses, right at the top for the 6th time. Vienna is followed by Barcelona (148), Paris (147), Berlin (138), Singapore (136), Madrid (114), Istanbul (109), Lisbon (106), Amsterdam (104) and Sydney (102).

Congresses, conferences and promotional events are an important part of Vienna’s tourism industry. Exceptional congress infrastructure, the high standards in the congress service industry and the city’s multifaceted cultural scene have all contributed to make Vienna the top destination when it comes to international conferences.

In the ICCA’s country rankings Austria takes 14th place, whereby 73% of the total 212 congresses held in Austria last year took place in Vienna. The USA retained its top spot with 623 international congresses in 2010, followed by Germany (542) and Spain (451). Also in the Top 10 are Great Britain (399), France (371), Italy (341), Japan (305), China (282), Brazil (275) and Switzerland (244).
