Record visitor numbers for the 2015 summer season

10 December 2015

With 69.4 million overnight stays and 21.85 million individual visits, one country at the heart of Europe has notched up its best summer results since 1994.

Austria is riding high again as a tourist destination. According to the Statistics Austria data service, considerably more visitors spent their summer holiday in Austria between May and October 2015 than in the previous year (+6.3% to 21.85 million individual visits). This record figure is primarily due to visitors from abroad (+ 7.5% to 14.45 million), although with 7.4 million individual visits (+3.9%), holidaymakers from Austria have also been doing their bit to make these figures so impressive.

The number of overnight stays also rose 3.3% to 69.4 million during the high season – the best summer figures since 1994. International visitors were principally responsible for the rise in holiday accommodation bookings (+3.5%), with some 36% of all overnight stopovers being by visitors from Germany.

There were also positive increases in the number of overnight stays made by visitors from other major countries such as the Netherlands (+2.7%), Switzerland (+5.7%), Italy (+5.0%), United Kingdom (+6.7%), the Czech Republic (+11.3%) and the USA (+13.3%).
