Vienna: Record overnight figures for first half of 2015

11 August 2015

During the first half of 2015, Vienna registered around 6.3 million visitor overnights which corresponds to a 5.4% increase compared to the same period in the previous year.

The new all-time record reflects Vienna's continued attractiveness as an international tourist destination. In May, the city hosted the 60th Eurovision Song Contest which put the capital in the international spotlight and most certainly contributed to the impressive record figure. This year Vienna also marks the 150th anniversary of the iconic Ringstrasse Boulevard, celebrated with a colourful program, numerous events and exhibitions.

International tourists account for more than 80% of Vienna's total volume of overnights. On top of the list ranks Germany with almost 1.3 Mio bednights, followed by tourists from the USA, Italy and the UK. Austria’s capital has also seen an increase in visitors from Australia (+3%), putting Down Under in 22nd place with nearly 65,000 bednights, and particularly strong growth from New Zealand (+24.7 % or 8,500 bednights).

Vienna has been equally successful as a congress metropolis: The International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) ranked the Austrian capital in second place worldwide for its international congresses in 2014.
