AUSTRALIA’S LARGEST DOUBLE MEMBRANE GAS HOLDER
MADE IN AUSTRIA BY SATTLER

13 February 2015

A spectacular orb-shaped green-energy storage facility at one of Australia’s largest beef processing plants is helping to demonstrate how industry can profit from environmental initiatives.

The 6000 cubic metre capacity polyester-fibre storage “balloon” collects biogas produced in a nearby covered anaerobic lagoon, installed as part of a major methane abatement and energy-saving project at Oakey Beef Export on Queensland’s Darling Downs.

The 30-metre-high PVC coated sphere can be seen from kilometres away as travelers pass on the nearby Warrego Highway. This unique biogas storage, designed and manufactured by the Austrian company Sattler, has been tested and proven in other industries. It is one of the largest in the world and the largest in Australia. The system is engineered to be permanently gas-tight with high operational reliability and optimum safety.
Through the installation of this system, the storage of the generated biogas from in-house waste can be made available when required, cost-efficient and completely independent from wind or sun conditions. The gained energy will be used entirely within the beef processing plant. This not only guarantees a reduction of operating costs but also a reduction of CO2 emissions.

Considering the positive effect towards climate goals, the operating company of the plant requested a well-visible logo to be placed on the “balloon”. The implementation of the logo print represented a major challenge for the Sattler technicians. The outcome, however, is an eye-catcher.
