Queen of Eurovision from Austria performed at Sydney Opera House

Conchita
15 March 2016

Austrians most famous present-day music ambassador and 2014 Eurovision Song Contest winner Conchita Wurst performed at a sold out Sydney Opera House on 3 March in an one-off concert event with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. The concert themed “From Vienna with Love” was presented in association with the Austrian National Tourist Office and the Vienna Tourist Board as an official Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras Festival event.

The concert showed Conchita‘s versatility, her endearing presence, her strong sense of comedy and her brilliant voice. Since Austria was the first country that invited Australia to join the Eurovision the event was also the perfect platform to reveal Australia's next representative at the contest in May 2016 - Dami Im. The South Korean-born singer is seen as a perfect fit for one of the world's most popular and, at times, peculiar contests.

Conchita has become a global gay icon and spokesman for gay rights, performing at Pride festivals across Europe as well as at anti-discrimination events held in Brussels and at the United Nations Office at Vienna. Beyond gay rights, Wurst is vocal about other human rights issues such as the plight of Syrian refugees in Europe.

With the performance at the Sydney Opera a dream came true for Conchita: "Everyone on the planet who makes music wants to be on that stage and I can't even tell you how honoured and happy I am.“
