New cash control measures for travel to and from the European Union as of 15 June 2007.

All travellers entering or leaving the European Union with 10,000 Euro or more in cash must declare the sum to customs at the EU control point. This requirement also applies to the equivalent sum in other currencies and easily convertible assets, such as bonds, shares, traveller's cheques and the like.

This new requirement is in compliance with European Regulation (EC) No. 1889/2005 and is applicable in all EU member states as of 15 June 2007. It is intended to deter such illegal activities as money laundering and the financing of terrorism.

Failure to comply with the regulation may result in the cash being detained or confiscated, and the carrier being subjected to heavy penalties.
