Austrian wine on everyone's lips
Last year saw solid growth in Austrian wine exports - the main consumers of the Austrian nectar are Germany, Switzerland and the USA.
In 2008 the export record first set in 2007 was exceeded once again. The Austrian Wine Marketing Board (Österreichische Weinmarketinggesellschaft (ÖWM) reports total wine exports in 2008 of 60 million litres (+6.9%), bringing the total value up to EUR 113m (+8.5%). When it comes to exports of bottled wine, which already account for 87% of the total export value, the rise is even higher. Austria’s most important export countries for wine are Germany, (accounting for 57% of all wine exports), Switzerland (12%) and the USA (7%). Developments in Great Britain and Scandinavia have also been extremely positive, with high growth rates recorded in recent years.
The domestic market share of wine from Austria was secured last year. The gastronomy industry remains the most important intermediary and last year saw Austrian wines hold over 80% of market share.
