Standards

ÖNORM standards govern the quality control of food and beverages. Austria is a country of gourmets and fully complies with international and European standards and even goes beyond them in many cases. Here, you will find information on general requirements, hygiene, management systems and health.

Austrian food products meet traditionally high demands. 450 ÖNORM standards guarantee more than flawless quality — for example, for milk, cereals and meat as well as tea, honey and spices. The majority of those standards specifies test methods permitting the analysis of components and ingredients as well as providing evidence of product quality.

The consumer is king and expects prime quality. The required basis is laid in food production by means of clear hygiene specifications defined for manufacturing processes. On the products’ way to the supermarket shelves and to the consumer, the loss in quality is to be kept to a minimum. That is ensured, inter alia, by international management standards with a special focus on smooth organisation and seamless traceability.

The food sector is highly dynamic. For consumers, health issues become more and more important. These developments in society are reflected by standards that respond to new concerns, such as:

  • How can genetic modifications be detected?
  • Do food products really have a low fat content?
  • Are allergenic ingredients “hidden” in products?

For further details and information on current developments, please see the page “Food and Beverages” on the Website of the Austrian Standards Institute.
