Customs Regulations
Entry to Austria from within the European Union
(Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Great Britain, Irleand, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Sweden, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Cyprus):
In general, customs checks are no longer carried out, although spot checks can occur at any time. On direct flights (no stopover in non-EU countries) from one EU country to another, EU travellers may use the blue exit. If the journey began outside the EU and only included a transit stop in an EU country, the regulations for non-EU countries apply.
Allowances
Duty-free allowances to Austria from EU countries for personal use:
- 800 Cigarettes
- 400 Cigarillos (each max. 3 grammes weight)
- 200 Cigars
- 1 kg Smoking Tobacco
- 10 litres of spirits
- 90 litres of wine (of which max. 60 litres sparkling wine)
- 110 litres of beer
- Duty Free purchases are no longer available when travelling within the EU.
Attention: Tobacco products from the new EU member states - Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, the Czech Republic and Hungary- are subject to extra restrictions.
No extra restrictions for Bulgaria and Rumania.
Entry to Austria from outside the European Union (Third Countries)
The following goods are duty-free when imported from outside the EU (highest quantities are stated and are valid for personal use or as gifts):
- Tobacco products (per person over 17 years old):
- 200 Cigarettes or
- 100 Cigarillos (Cigars weighing 3g max) or
- 50 Cigars or
- 250g Smoking Tobacco or
- a proportionate combination of these goods
- Alcoholic Beverages (per person over 17 years old):
- 1 litre spirits (over 22% volume) or
- 2 litres spirits, aperitifs, sparking wines, fortified wines (max. 22% volume) or
- a proportionate combination of these goods and
- 2 litres of non-sparkling wine
- 50cc perfume and 250cc eau de toilette
- Medicines for personal use during the journey
- Other goods with a maximum total value of EUR 175 per person
Customs allowances cannot be shared among multiple travellers.
Travel Equipment
Equipment for personal use during the stay may be brought into Austria without declarations or documentation. There are some exceptions e.g. new goods such as photographic equipment, where the receipt must be shown on request.
