Optimal weather conditions led to an exceptionally high yield for Austrian apple producers. Austria's apple growers produced 195,000 tonnes of apples - one in every two apples is exported.

An optimal number of sunshine hours and the appropriate humidity produced apples of better quality and a larger quantity than last year's. In Styria - "the Austrian Apple Province" - the farmers harvested 150,000 tonnes of apples, of which around 3,000 tonnes were organic. With a surface area of around 4,900 hectares, the 1,000 Styrian apple growers produced 75% of the Austrian total. Across the whole of Austria, a total of 195,000 apples were harvested. Half of the total is exported to 20 countries worldwide - Germany, Great Britain, Scandinavia and Eastern Europe are the main export markets. The average Austrian consumes 28kg of apples each year.
