Austria’s agriculture industry is known for its high quality products and its reputation beyond Europe is also growing. Particularly successful products include meat, cheese, fruit and vegetables as well as processed foods.

It’s one success story after another for Austrian agro-exports: last year exports by Austria’s agricultural industry saw a surprisingly strong rise of 8.3% to total EUR 7.75bn. This year the explosion is even greater: the first quarter underwent a massive 21% increase (export value: EUR 2.2bn). This represents an all-time export high for the industry.

Growth in terms of value was recorded in every country. Germany continues to be the biggest export market for Austrian agriculture. Italy saw surprising rises in value, while France, with an increase of 25%, is the third largest foreign market. Agricultural exports are also experiencing year-on-year growth in the new EU member states – especially in Hungary, Slovenia and the Czech Republic. Their percentage of total exports is already at 19%.

Beyond Europe’s borders more and more countries are discovering “gourmet Austria”: almost a quarter (23%) of agro-exports go to other continents. Exports to the USA, for example, rose by around 20%. These pleasing interim results confirm the fact that Austrian farmers and the domestic food and drinks industry are on the right track with their dedication to quality in the food production and processing sectors.
