In 2010 industry exports had already risen by 12.2% to EUR 23.46 billion. Companies in the machinery and metalware industry are expecting good news again this year.

The first quarter 2011 saw impressive growth in exports by the Austrian machinery and metalware industry. Companies from this sector exported goods worth over EUR 6 billion – a plus of 19.5%. Imports amounted to around EUR 5 billion, a good billion euros below exports.

Three quarters of exports went to Europe; the largest share, worth EUR 1.8 billion, went as ever to Germany, followed by Italy, France and the Czech Republic. Austria predominantly supplies components and machinery elements to Germany which are then used in end products manufactured there. Exports to Asia amounted to EUR 795 million, with around EUR 588 million to America, EUR 90 million to Africa and EUR 56 million to Australia/Oceania.

In 2010 companies in the Austrian machinery and metalware industry employed around 150,000 staff and generated revenue of EUR 33 billion. Last year the industry accounted for 21.5% of all Austrian exports.
