Continued success for Austrian wine exports

5. February 2013

The Austrian wine industry managed to maintain export volumes in 2012 despite the low yields and even saw revenues increase.

Not big, but beautiful – this focus on quality has enabled the Austrian wine sector to keep up with major growers such as France, Italy or Spain. In 2012 Austrian wine exports continued to do well, as shown by preliminary figures recently published by Statistics Austria and Austrian Wine Marketing .

In terms of quantity, the 46 million litres exported were only slightly up on 2011 (+1.6%), but sales revenues rose yoy by 2.25% to EUR 128.5m. Proof that consumers are increasingly opting for better quality wines in the medium and higher price segments.

EU countries are the most important export market, accounting for almost 90% of total wine exports. Germany continues to be Austria’s largest wine buyer, with 60% of all export revenue generated there. Switzerland is in second place, followed by the USA, where sales bounced back to levels seen in the years 2008/09 before the economic crisis. Further growth was recorded in the Netherlands, Belgium, Norway, Finland and Italy, while Japan and China stood out among the new overseas markets.
