MED-EL founder wins renowned Ludwig Wittgenstein Award 2014

Key scientific recognition for Ingeborg Hochmair, CEO of Austrian hearing implant manufacturer MED-EL and inventor of the cochlear implant.

Ingeborg Hochmair, founder and CEO of Austrian hearing implant manufacturer MED-EL , has been developing hearing solutions for the deaf since 1975, leading to the first ever implantation of a multi-channel, micro-electronic cochlear implant. She has now won the renowned Ludwig Wittgenstein Award 2014. The cochlear implant was and remains today the only medical device capable of replacing a sense.

MED-EL, headquartered in Austria and with 29 offices worldwide, is the world’s leading provider of hearing implant systems. MED-EL offers the widest product range for implant solutions capable of treating a variety of different types of hearing loss. Today there are around 100,000 people who have regained their hearing thanks to a MED-EL product.

The Ludwig Wittgenstein Award from the Austrian Research Association is named after Austrian philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein and is awarded to scientists in recognition of exceptional achievements. It is presented once every two years to individuals whose research was conducted in Austria or whose scientific achievements are exceptionally important to Austria.
