Austria – the land of glass recycling

28. October 2014

Recycling glass helps the environment and climate protection. Glass has been collected and recycled in Austria since the mid 1970s, divided into clear and coloured glass. Around 234,000 tonnes were recycled in 2013 – and this figure is growing every year.

From January to June 2014 around 115,300 tonnes of glass were collected in Austria – over 300 tonnes more than in the same period 2013. Collection and recycling of glass packaging in Austria is handled by the non-profit organisation Austria Glas Recycling (in German) . International comparisons show that the Austrian glass recycling system has long been one of the world’s best.

One of the many factors in maintaining and increasing the recycling rate long term is consistent information on the right way to collect and recycle glass. Harald Hauke, Managing Director of Austria Glas Recycling GmbH: “The figures have proven once again that Austria is a land of glass recycling. Responsible, well-informed citizens and mature, practical infrastructure form the basis of this success. We are committed to making constant improvements to this system, thereby making a key contribution to environmental and climate protection together with the population, local councils and our partner companies, as well as securing a responsible, cyclical industry”.

Glass recycling is the perfect cyclical industry. All of the glass collected can be 100% recycled and used to produce new glass packaging. This saves a great deal of primary raw materials and energy.
