Vinterberg’s play “Die Kommune” premiered in Vienna.

The popular Danish director Thomas Vinterberg made his breakthrough by shooting the „Dogma“ movie „Festen“ in 1997. Last year he has already given a successful guest performance at the Burgtheater, now he is back with his new play “Die Kommune”, which was first performed in Vienna on Sept. 10th.

It is the story about a failed social experiment in Copenhagen, middle of the 70ties. Anna, the mother and co-founder of the commune, gets abandoned by her partner Erik, who has fallen in love with the much younger Emma. The new situation gets fierce for Anna and quite complicated for their joint daughter Freya but even worse for the whole commune. From now on the new and old love, the daughter and the man, who caused the problems, live all together under the same roof. The other housemates, particularly the commune’s doyen Ole, try to interfere in the grotesque situation. How should that work out? Classical conflicts emerge and the grassroots democracy starts to crumble.

In cooperation with the actors, Thomas Vinterberg has created a play that relentlessly reveals the clash of individual needs and the idea of a community.

The premier was a success and mainly received great reviews. Till the beginning of October the play will be performed at the Akademietheater in Vienna.
