Austria’s largest state now produces 100% of electricity from renewable energy

10. November 2015

Lower Austria, one of Austria’s nine states receives its electricity from hydroelectric power, wind energy, biomass and solar.

Two-thirds of Lower Austria’s electricity comes from hydroelectric power generated by the Danube River which flows through the state. Furthermore the country produces 70 percent of its electricity using renewable energy sources, a higher national energy share than any other European Union nation, beating Sweden, Latvia, Portugal, and Denmark.

In terms of the nation’s total energy production – not just electricity generation – Austria is currently sourcing about a third from renewable sources.

Austria’s achievement will be good news for world leaders attending the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris 2015.
