Austrian wines make 15% of NOMAs wine

3. June 2014

NOMA in Copenhagen has approx. 1.000 different wines on its wine list - 150 of these are Austrian.

NOMAs chef sommelier Mads Kleppe said in an interview with ‘profil’ (Mai 2014) that he follows the Austrian wine market with excitement and enthusiasm. As a young sommelier he was invited to Austria by the Austrian Wine Marketing Board . Since then he has followed the development of Austrian wines and refined his knowledge. In his time at Noma he went from Austrian classics toward – what he calls – the modern Wachauer Stil, and wines from Steiermark and Burgenland. Personally he likes a 2012er ‘Himmel und Erden’ (heaven and earth) from Christian Tschida from Ilmitz and Franz Strohmeiers Orange-Wine from St. Stefan (Steiermark). Today you will find special, unusual and alternative wines on the NOMA wine list .

Austria produced 2.4 mio hl wine in 2013. A rather small volume compared to other European wine producing countries, e.g. France 44.1 mio hl and Germany 8.4 mio hl. However, when it comes to quality Austrian wines are excellent. In Austria you will find a great diversity in climate, ground, grape varieties and production.
