111 Palfinger cranes for Denmark's largest offshore wind farm

19. January 2012

In 2012 the Austrian company Palfinger Wind will supply 111 cranes to the Danish energy giant DONG Energy. The state of the art cranes will be used at the windfarm in Anholt, Kattegat.

The delivery of the 111 high-tech cranes to Denmark has already started in early January. The offshore wind farm in Anholt (Kattegat) is the largest in Denmark and includes 111 turbines. DONG Energy, the operator of the wind farms, has ordered one crane for every one of these turbines for various maintenance work. Palfinger CEO Herbert Ortner said in an interview with the Salzburger Nachrichten: "The use of our cranes will make the loading and unloading operations of supply vessels faster and safer". Palfinger Wind is the world's leading manufacturer of marine, rescue and wind cranes. The turnover of 7 Mio. € is to be more than doubled this year.

On New Year's Eve 2011, the first of the 111 foundations of the wind farm has been placed in Anholt, a day before the planned start of construction. Due to the severe weather, the floating crane, 'Svanen' which had laid the first foundation, had to return immediately after the action due to a storm warning in the harbour to Grenaa. The responsible project manager Claus Møller Bøjle confirmed in an interview, that such weather-related delays were included in the plan and any weather window will of course be used for work on the wind farm. With a capacity of 400 MW the wind farm in Anholt (planned completion in 2013) will contribute significantly to the climate policy goals in Denmark. The wind farm will provide electricity for 400.000 homes.
