The Austrian Federal Economic Chamber in Vienna and the Austrian Commercial Office in Cairo are planning a Trade Mission to Cairo from May 2 to 5, 2010

Egypt has not been totally spared by the international financial crisis, but appears to be one of the less affected countries in the region. In the financial year 2008/2009 (July to July) Egypt still has achieved an economic growth rate of 4.6 %. For the current fiscal year, the government expects a growth of 5% and hopes for a recovery of 7 to 8% within the next two years.

The Import of Austrian goods to Egypt has doubled since 2004 and has reached in 2008 a record high of Euro 207 million. As a result of the declining growth the imports stagnated until the middle of the year 2009, but by the end of October the imports increased again by 2.3% to Euro 173,3 million.

An increase of imports is seen mainly in the field of machinery, pharmaceutical products, iron and steel and measuring instruments.

We assume that Egypt can be seen – despite the difficult situation – as an alternative to the traditional export markets of Austrian enterprises.
