Styrian High-Tech for Australian Army 7. January 2009

Magna Steyr manufactures and supplies Mercedes off-road vehicles for down under – the Mercedes G-Class has been produced in Graz since 1979.

The automobile group Mercedes-Benz has won the order from the Australian government to supply 1,200 G-Class off-road vehicles for the Australian Defence Force. The special models will be manufactured in Styria, the green heart of Austria, at Magna Steyr in Graz. The contract is worth around EUR 200 m. The first vehicles should be delivered in 2009.

The Magna plant in Graz has an annual capacity of around 4,500 G-Class vehicles. The Australian military version should incorporate several special features including a special three-axle construction. Both the civilian and military versions of the G-Class have been produced in Graz since 1979. Since then, around 195,000 vehicles of this type have come off the production line.
