CLIMATE PROTECTION – International Standards are needed 16. January 2009

There is already agreement among policy-makers around the globe: climate protection has top priority. In order to have a well-functioning comparative system for the reduction of CO2 emissions, international standards are needed. An international group of experts established by ISO already started to prepare such a standard. Klaus Radunsky, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and representative of Austria in the UN Climate Council chairs this work.

For climate expert Radunsky climate protection is really the first global problem that can only be solved globally. However, each country defines its own focal areas, such as labelling or recycling. Klaus Radunsky’s task is to achieve consensus in an international working group on the meaning of the "Carbon Footprint of Products" - the international title - irrespective of the products’ type.

The experts co-operate with the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD). China and India, the big Asian emerging economies, participate in these standardisation activities alongside with the US. It is targeted to deliver results within three years.
