Official working visit of the Austrian Federal President to Egypt  October 21 - 23, 2007

An Economic Mission to Cairo and Alexandria took place during the official working visit of HE the Austrian Federal President, Dr. Heinz Fischer, to Egypt on October 21-23, 2007. The business delegation that accompanied him consisted of high ranking officials and representatives of Austrian companies from all kinds of business sectors. 

The Austrian Federal President, Dr. Heinz Fischer, paid an official working visit to Egypt from October 21 to 23, 2007. He was accompanied by a big official delegation, in particular the Minister of European and International Affairs, Dr. Ursula Plassnik, the State Secretary for Finance, Dr. Christoph Matznetter, the State Secretary of Economics and Labour, Mrs. Christa Marek, and the State Secretary for Innovation, Transport and Technology, Mrs. Christine Kranzl.

An Austrian business delegation under the direction of Dr. Richard Schenz, Vice President of the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber, accompanied the Austrian Federal President Dr. Heinz Fischer on this official working visit to Egypt. The delegation consisted of 36 representatives of 28 Austrian companies28 Austrian companies [pdf, 1,052.3kb]from all kinds of business sectors. Their visit included Cairo and Alexandria. On October 21, 2007, the delegation was invited by Mr. Ahmed el Wakil, President of the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce, for a business lunch at Alexandria with about 60 businessmen from Alexandria. This business lunch served the exploration of further intensification of business relations between Egypt and Austria. On the same evening both chapters of the Egyptian Austrian Business Council, represented by Mr. Emad Taymour for the Egyptian side and Dr. Richard Schenz for the Austrian side, invited the entire Austrian delegation and the interested Egyptian business community for a business reception in Cairo .


On October 22, 2007 a business forum was opened by the Austrian Federal President Dr. Heinz Fischer in Cairo . Presentations on the economic development in Egypt and Austria and the potential for further collaboration between Austrian and Egyptian companies were delivered by Mrs. Christa Marek, State Secretary of Economics and Labour, Dr. Richard Schenz, Vice President of the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber from the Austrian side and Eng. Mohamed Lotfy Mansour, Minister of Transport, and Mrs. Fayza Aboulnaga, Minister of International Cooperation, from the Egyptian side. The opening of the business forum was attended by 350 guests from all business sectors and governmental organizations. A matchmaking event for individual business talks between Austrian and Egyptian companies and authorities followed the opening of the business forum, where all Austrian companies had about 200 pre-arranged meetings with their respective counterparts. This one-day business forum was organized by the Commercial Office of the Austrian Embassy in Cairo.

During this event a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Egyptian Minister of Transport, Eng. Mohamed Lotfy Mansour, and the Austrian Secretary of State for Innovation, Transport and Technology, Mrs. Christine Kranzl, on the “Expansion of Cooperation in the Railways, Maritime and Urban Mass Transportation Sector”. Between the Egyptian Minister of Health, Dr. Hatem el Gabaly, and the Austrian Secretary of State, Mrs. Christine Kranzl, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed on “Technology Related Cooperation in the Health Sector”.

As a highlight of this visit a Softloan Agreement was signed between the Egyptian Minister of International Cooperation, Mrs. Fayza Aboulnaga, and the Austrian State Secretary for Finance, Dr. Christoph Matznetter, to finance projects in the fields of health, public transport, education and water/sanitation within a period of 2 years for the total amount of 50 mill. Euro.

The business forum did not only yield immediate results and the conclusion of contracts between Austrian and Egyptian companies, but – with a very wide media coverage in Egypt and Austria - has played a decisive role in raising awareness in Egypt and in Austria of the potential of the development of economic relations between both countries and the vast opportunities Egypt and Austria offer.  

As conclusion of the visit, the 3rd plenary meeting of the Egyptian Austrian Business Council was held with 9 members present from the Austrian side and 14 members from the Egyptian side.
