The Cullinan Bird, designed and built by a team of engineers and architects from London wowed the crowd with the longest flight of the day, soaring for over 39m before landing in the Serpentine. But the Red Bull Flugtag competition isn’t all about distance and the Cullinan Bird team failed to impress the judges with their pre-flight performance, resulting in a 5th place finish.
“Flugtag”, created by Red Bull, brings the brands ethos of ‘Red Bull Gives You Wings!’ to life.
Second place in the crazy, flying extravaganza was taken by the Flying Aquanauts’ ‘Yellow Submarine’ with 56 points. Third place with 55 points was taken by Dragon’s Tale, built by a team from Wales.
The first ever Red Bull Flugtag took place in Austria back in 1992. Today, Flugtag has spread its wings across the world, with 74 events taking off in 55 cities including Rome, Vancouver, Dubai, Sao Paulo, and Athens, as well as many cities across the USA.
The competition was judged on distance flown and level of creativity. Points were also awarded for the entertainment value of the pre-flight performance by the celebrity judging panel which included Strictly Come Dancing’s Craig Revel-Horwood, BBC Fame Academy’s Carrie Grant and model Jodie Kidd.
The Red Bull Flugtag follows Red Bull's recent foray into the cola market in the UK with the launch of a Red Bull cola drink back in March 2008. Twenty years in the making, Red Bull Simply Cola is made with 100% natural ingredients, including the original kola nut and the coca leaf. It has no preservatives, additives, phosphoric acid, artificial colourings or flavours, and is supplied in 250ml cans.
Nigel Trood, Red Bull UK managing director, said: “This is an incredibly exciting innovation for Red bull and a fantastic addition to our portfolio. It may have been unexpected, but we’re quite fond of surprising people and we thought it was about time we refreshed the cola category.
