A state-of-the art new paper mill in King's Lynn is being built with the aid of Austrian planning and construction expertise.  The £330m newsprint mill represents the largest UK mill investment in over a decade. Once completed in 2009, the new facility will be Europe's most modern fully integrated paper mill and conversion plant.

Competition within UK newsprint manufacturing is heating up after Palm Paper Ltd revealed plans for a new £330m investment in a mill in King’s Lynn, Norfolk. The plant will house a 10.5m-wide paper machine, which will have the capacity to produce 400,000 tonnes of recycled newsprint a year.

The implementation of the project, which represents the largest major investment in the British newsprint industry for over ten years, relies heavily on Austrian know-how and technology.

The project relies heavily on Austrian engineering expertise and construction technology.

The design for the state-of-the-art newsprint mill was carried out by the Austrian engineering firm, BHM, which is based in Feldkirch in western Austria.

Hilti und Jehle, a Feldkirch construction company, have been awarded the contract for the foundation works. The Austrian company has 10 of its own employees on site and is also using pile driving equipment supplied by Liebherr Nenzing. The geotechnical analysis will be conducted by Austrian firm 3P Geotechnik ZP.

Construction work is already underway and the project is scheduled for completion by January 2009. This will be followed during 2009 by the installation of the paper machine.

Palm Paper's new state-of-the art newsprint machine will be the world's largest machine processing newsprint from 100% recycled fibre.

The project is set to create around 150 jobs in and around King's Lynn and it is hoped the massive cash injection – thought to be the area's biggest private sector investment for a number of years – will attract further businesses to the area.
