Holzbau Saurer builds Aston Martin's new Design Studio

14. December 2007

Aston Martin has opened a brand new design facility at its headquarters in Gaydon near Birmingham. Constructed by Austrian pre-fabrication specialists, Holzbau Saurer, the studio took just six months to build and is a showcase for environmentally sustainable design.

Aston Martin’s new design studio cements the company’s reputation as one of the world’s most technologically sophisticated sports car manufacturers. The move to take the design studio in house was taken by Aston CEO, Ulrich Bez, in a bid for to take ownership of the design process. “Aston Martin is about design and it is about beauty,” he says, “yet until now it has never had its own design studio.”

The construction of the elegant, modern pavilion was overseen by Austrian pre-fabrication specialists, Holzbau Saurer, incorporating the best of Austrian woodworking knowledge and experience. The architecture makes extensive use of structural wood and large expanses of glass. The modular wooden structure has been sourced from managed forests in Austria and Switzerland. The studio has taken just six months to build and only twelve months to complete from its design conception to completion.

The building is insulated to a very high level beyond UK building requirements and uses only natural hemp material for wall insulation. In Spring 2008 a sedum roof will be planted. This is a plant which grows slowly and needs only periodic cutting. This helps with drainage and insulation thus reducing energy requirements.

The main structure which comprises almost 500m3 of laminated spruce and 30m3 of oak is all farmed from a managed sustainable forest in Austria . The spruce used is replenished in only nine minutes.
