Austrian facade creator transforms Edinburgh

10. June 2008

Premium facade engineer, GIG Fassaden GmbH is helping to transform Edinburgh having been awarded a number of high-profile contracts at the prestigious Quartermile development, designed by Foster + Partners.

GIG Fassaden has been active in the UK market for 20 years. Well-known architects, main contractors and investors are fans of the quality of GIG products and services and entrust GIG with the realisation of their visions.

GIG implements the ideas of clients, architects and facade planners. Transforming them into polished technical and mechanical solutions, the quality of which has earned GIG FASSADEN an enviable reputation.

Facade technology at its toughest

Back in 2002 GIG demonstrated with the Centrica-project in Edinburgh, a new Call Centre for Scottish Gas, that GIG facades bear up even extreme weather conditions. GIG was entrusted with the complete outer skin with special sun shade. The main challenge on the project was that the generously dimensioned facade had to withstand the strong Scottish winds. GIG solved this problem by means of a bespoke construction, which was wind tunnel tested, that allowed the secure anchorage of the lightweight brise soleil at 4.5 metre intervals.

Quartermile Edinburgh

Foster+Partners Masterplan for the former Edinburgh Royal Infirmary demonstrates how an inner-city site that has outlived its former use can be transformed to create a new high-density urban community. The Quartermile site will become a vibrant new urban quarter, with over 700 new homes, high-quality office space, a five-star hotel, a health club, restaurants, cafes, a supermarket and other shops.

The new buildings take advantage of the stunning location by offering extensive views from fully glazed facades, and so far three building packages at this prestigious site have been awarded to GIG Fassaden.

The first package, Q2 was awarded by the client Gladedale in May 2006 via Main Contractor Sir Robert McAlpine. In November, GIG began the on-site installation of various mixed facade types for this office building. The client and the main contractor as well as the architect Foster+Partners were delighted with GIG’s contribution to the Q2-project.

As a consequence Q16 & Q18 have been awarded to GIG by the client Southside Capital and Main Contractor Sir Robert McAlpine — two nearly identical residential buildings in the centre of Edinburgh, in High Meadows adjacent to the finished Q2-building.

Foster+Partners has designed striking, new, state-of-the-art apartment buildings for Quartermile. Many directly overlook the Meadows or enjoy fantastic views to the city centre or the south of Edinburgh. The challenge at this project is the logistics because of the large element sizes and the numerous building corners.

GIG has also been awarded the Q6 project, which consists of two buildings: the Main Building will be used for office space and the South Pavilion will accommodate retail units.

The office building Q2 was completed in October 2007. Q16 and Q18 are scheduled for completion in October 2008, with Q6 to be ready by Summer 2009.
