The energy and environmental engineering cluster ECO WORLD STYRIA has been voted worldwide number 1 in the ranking of the international Cleantech Group.

This award is an impressive accolade for the cluster work of Styria/Austria. “In 2008 alone around 2,000 new jobs were created. Within just five years, ECO WORLD STYRIA has been able to climb to the very top of the energy and environmental engineering sector”, explains Christian Buchmann, member of the Styrian provincial government.

The Cleantech Group, with its headquarters in Atlanta, is a global investment network in the “clean technologies” field and has been generating worldwide rankings according to specially developed criteria for many years. Whereas the past focus has been on countries and universities, this year’s criteria were applied to environmental engineering clusters for the first time.

“150 companies generate revenues of 2.7 billion euros in environmental engineering, which is comparable to around 8% of regional GDP. A 22% average growth rate over the last few years, which is substantially higher than global market growth, indicates that world market shares have been attained. Thus, Styria has the highest density of “clean technologies” companies, which justified the ranking decision for the author of the Cleantech study Shawn Lesser. He also praises the pioneering work and innovative power of the Styrian companies.

In 2nd to 5th place of the rankings are the clusters from New England, Finland, Canada and Denmark. See the full rankings, as well as a definition of the term “cluster”, at http://cleantech.com/news/5640/top-10-cleantech-clusters.

Bernhard Puttinger, Managing Director of ECO WORLD STYRIA sees the award as the result of the strategy pursued in the last few years: “We have achieved our vision to become the number one ‘clean technologies’ location," he says. The objective for the next five years is to double the number of companies with global engineering leadership by focusing on five strategic innovation levers.

ECO WORLD STYRIA was founded in 2005, and today comprises over 150 member companies. Currently these Styrian engineering companies employ around 13,000 people. The supporting organisations are the Styrian Business Promotion Agency (SFG), the Federal Province of Styria and the City of Graz.
