Austrian design reinvents the tea cup

Vera Wiedermann's tea drinking innovation - Tea a me
7. October 2011

Austrian designer, Vera Wiederman, is causing quite a stir with her tea drinking innovation ‘Te a me’.

With the increasingly popularity of fruit and herbal teas, tea drinkers are finding that regular tea cups or mugs often pose problems with tea bags that need to steep.

We’ve all had the experience when pouring a cup of tea of accidentally dropping the tea bag into the tea or the frustration of getting the string on the tea bag entangled and knotted. The tea set Te a me addresses this problem in an uncomplicated way; the tea bag is suspended from the edge of the cup. There’s no problem either with the question of what to do when the tea bag has finished steeping. By deepening the middle of the saucer, the tea bag can be discarded there after use and covered by the cup. No unsightly mess!

The Te a me series of tea cups is currently available in limited editions of black, violet, beige and mint to complement the original version in white.

Functional and elegant, the new game plan for the tea bag retains its elegance and functionality with the launch of the “Limited Colour Edition” in August 2011.

The Te a me Tea Set was originally launched as a white edition during the Vienna Design Week in 2010 and was received into the permanent design collection of the Museum for Applied Arts Vienna (MAK) in 2011.
