No Oktoberfest without beer mugs from Austria

4. October 2012

Stölzle-Oberglas produces over a million beer mugs for the Munich Oktoberfest every year.

The Oktoberfest in Munich is the world’s biggest fair, now being held for the 179th time. Last year saw almost 7 million visitors flock to the “Wiesn”, as the fairgrounds are known.

A stronger beer is brewed especially for the event and is traditionally served in 1-litre glasses, called Maßkrüge. Here the guests have an Austrian product in their hands with every sip they take, as the beer mugs have been produced by Stölzle-Oberglas for decades. This is equivalent to between 1 and 1.4 million glasses a year for the Munich Oktoberfest alone.

The wellknown beer mug, also called “Isar-Krug”, weighs 1.2kg when empty and is Stölzle’s bestselling beer mug. A total of around 2.5 million of these tankards are produced every year and exported as far afield as the USA. Using the Munich fair as a model, Oktoberfests are now celebrated across the globe. The number of beer mugs from Austria is also on the rise, as Stölzle-Oberglas is one of the most important producers of glasses of this type in Europe.

The Stölzle Glass Group, headquartered in Köflach, Austria, also holds a unique position in Europe with its other business: it is the only full-service provider to manufacture high-quality packaging glass for the international Prestige & Beauty and Healthcare & Consumer markets, as well supplying stylish tableware to restaurants and hotels. The company operates four production sites in Austria, Great Britain, Poland and the Czech Republic and is represented in the USA, France and Russia with its own sales companies.
