Job vacancy at the German Historical Institute in London

GHIL
10. January 2013

The German Historical Institute London (GHIL) is seeking to employ a Caretaker

The GHIL is an academic research institute. Our four-storey Grade II listed building in Bloomsbury Square houses a team of German and British academics and a substantial library. Our future caretaker would join the team in our administration department.

Your main duties would include the usual caretaker tasks such as maintenance and minor repairs (heating, electrics, plumbing etc.) and liaising with external contractors. In addition you would be responsible for building security, and would also be expected to help with small office jobs such as photocopying, mailing etc. Another important aspect of the job is the preparation of rooms for our in-house events (conferences, lectures etc.), which involves shifting tables and chairs, and arranging them appropriately. You would also be required to prepare and serve refreshments during these events, which take place on a regular basis and involve some weekend and evening work. Flexibility regarding working hours is therefore essential.

The ideal person for this role would be reliable, committed, able to work independently and under pressure, and have a friendly and polite manner with the public. Previous relevant experience, basic computer literacy and some knowledge of German would be an advantage. The position is based on a 40-hour week, but flexibility as regards distribution of working hours is essential. The position could suit a 2-person job-share. Salary is in the range of £19,000-21,500 p.a. Generous holiday entitlement and employer’s pension contributions.

If you are interested in applying (either by post or email), please contact Wolfgang Haack, Administrative Director, GHIL, 17 Bloomsbury Square, London WC1A 2NJ, marking your application “Caretaker”. Please enclose covering letter, CV, and names/contact details of two referees. If you have any queries please contact Wolfgang Haack, Tel: 020173092020 or email whaack@ghil.ac.uk.
