Austrian start-up Crate.IO wins TechCrunch Disrupt Europe 2014 competition

22. October 2014

Austrian company CRATE.IO is the winner of the TechCrunch Disrupt Europe 2014 Battlefield competition. 15 companies were competing for GBP30,000, but the Austrians’ scalable database solutions convinced the jury – Mat Braddy (Just Eat), Sonali De Rycker (Accel Partners), Brent Hoberman (PROfounders Capital), Klaus Hommels (Lakestar), and Mattias Ljungman (Atomico) – in the final stage of the competition.

Crate.IO is an easy-to-use, new kind of database solution that solves companies’ data scaling problems. It builds on established open source components (Presto, Elasticsearch, Lucene, Netty) and allows users to quickly set up a distributed database cluster through a user-friendly interface. Large amount of data can be queried in real-time, reducing expensive computing times.

The software is open source, but the Austrian entrepreneurs aim to monetise on premium users who get preferential access and additional support services.

The CRATE team will be at the Pioneers Festival 2014 (29-30 October 2014, Vienna, Austria) and at The IoT Summit 2014 in Dublin (4-6 November 2014).
