Mayfield School in Redbridge named BIM Project of the Year

Austrian cross laminated timber specialist KLH teamed up with London architect David Miller Architects on the expansion of Mayfield School in London.

The design process for Mayfield Secondary School is a perfect example of how to solve the increase in demand for school places, tight programme and budget challenges that London is facing with its population growth and schools shortage gap.

This project required a smart solution to increase a large London secondary school from eight to twelve form entry (including detailed planning permission) in an incredibly tight 18 months. New accommodation provides teaching space for 1,800 students and 80 staff and includes science, ICT, arts, and sixth form facilities.

By combining innovative design technology – BIM (Building Information Modelling) with super sustainable off-site manufacturing techniques - CLT (Cross Laminated Timber), along with a highly collaborative approach, this BREEAM “Excellent” rated major new secondary school was designed and delivered within the tight timeframe enabling it to open for the start of the new academic year.
