Prestigious Glulam timber construction in the heart of London

The Austrian specialists in Glulam (glue laminated timber), were selected to build a giant gridshell roof above the prestigious Canary Wharf Crossrail station development in London. The beautifully geometric roof is a stunning feature of the mammoth £500m construction.

The project is the largest UK Glulam development to date, combining ecological construction with cutting edge structural design. The structure consists of over 1,500 Glulam members with 450 connecting steel nodes.

The 11,500m2 roof project is a great success for Wiehag with renowned Architect Foster + Partners designing the station, which features four levels underground and two levels above water level, including a rooftop park and 100,000ft2 of retail space. The Glulam gridshell roof, on full display thanks to a transparent ETFE fabric roof covering, will run the full length of the 300m long station, with dramatic cantilevers at each end.

“Iconic landmark buildings like the Canary Wharf Crossrail station are an important reference for the whole UK timber industry. A picture tells a thousand words and clearly demonstrates the ability of Glulam timber in combination with cutting edge structural design capabilities”, says John Spittle, Wiehag UK sales director.
