Cheese World Champion from the Green Heart of Austria

The Obersteirische Molkerei (Upper Styrian dairy) takes the title of World Champion. Erzherzog Johann Cheese wins the World Championship Cheese Contest in the USA.

Styria is known as the Green Heart of Austria and in addition to its enchanting countryside and impressive sights, it now offers a world champion - and it's a cheese! In Wisconsin (USA), "Erzherzog Johann Käse" of the  Obersteirischen Molkerei (in German) emerged from 1,941 different types of cheese to become the winner of the "World Championship Cheese Contest". 

The ingredients of this World Champion Cheese are mixed in a 11,000 litre tank, pressed to shape by hand and stored in a special ripening room after a salt bath. The Upper Styrian dairy, based in Knittelfeld and another location in Kapfenberg, turns milk into Alpine cheese, emmentaler, sliced cheese, processed cheese, butter and curd cheese as well as making full cream milk, whipping cream, curdled milk products and yogurt. In 2007, the dairy's turnover grew 18% from EUR 72.1 million to EUR 85.4 million; 45% of which is generated from exports.
