With its comprehensive program of cultural events Vienna is certainly among the most fascinating cities in the world - it is not, however, one of the most expensive.  Accounting to the worldwide "Cost of Living Survey 2009" by the acclaimed Mercer consulting group, Vienna comes in 21st place.

This year Tokyo tops the list of the most expensive cities worldwide for expatriates, followed by Osaka and last year’s leader Moscow. Overall the global top ten include five Asian and four European cities as well as New York. The city with the lowest cost of living among the 143 major cities covered by the Mercer survey, is Johannesburg.

In Europe, Moscow tops the ranking of the most expensive cities, followed by Geneva, Zurich, Copenhagen, Milan, Paris, Oslo, London and Rome. Warsaw has the lowest cost of living (in 113th place worldwide). Vienna comes in 21st place, compared to 19th place in 2008.

Major currency fluctuations have had a significant influence on this year’s list of rankings. This has meant that most European cities - including Vienna - have dropped down on the list.

The study measures the comparative cost of over 200 items in each location, including housing, public transport, food, clothing, household goods and entertainment.
