Austria is no longer only a top winter holiday destination - numbers of summer visitors are also on the rise. More and more people are coming to Austria for their summer holidays, especially from neighbouring countries.

Summer tourism in Austria is seeing huge development potential. The next years should see a sharp increase in visitors, especially from Eastern Europe. The travel market of the new EU members from Eastern Europe is showing dynamic growth, with the total overnight stays and arrivals to Austria increasing. Every year sees more tourists from the new member states visiting Austria in winter. In 2006 Hungary took first place with 1.4 million overnight stays, making it the most important tourist market. Hungary was closely followed by the Czech Republic, Poland and Romania. In percentages the number of overnight stays by Hungarian tourists rose by 7.9%, with Czech and Polish overnights rising by 9.1%. The sharpest rise in May and June 2007 was from German tourists, the number of nights rose by 4.7%. Germany remains the most important tourism market for Austria.
